Belgian 20 Francs coin Leopold II was established between the period 1867 and 1882., during the reign King Leopold II, who was the second King of the Belgians (1865–1909). This gold coin belongs to the class of European 20-franc gold coins, such as the French Napoleon III or the Swiss Helvetia, and is made to the same purity standard – 900/1000 fine, to 5.81 g of pure gold in a total weight of 6.45 g.
No aversion a portrait of King Leopold II is located with the inscription „LEOPOLD II ROI DES BELGES“ (Leopold II, King of the Belgians). Reverse displays the Belgian coat of arms – a crowned lion and the inscription „L’UNION FAIT LA FORCE“ (Unity makes strength), along with the value „20 FR“ and the year of minting.
The gold coin was minted in several Belgian mints, and the small letter below the coat of arms indicates the place of minting (usually Brussels).
Like other European ducats from that period, this gold coin has standardised dimensions – Diameter 21 mm and thickness around 1.3 mm. Today, it is considered one of of the most famous Belgian gold coins and a prized collector's item due to its historical and artistic value.
