Its allure has endured for thousands of years – from the moment the first civilisations discovered it, right up to today's modern world. Gold is simultaneously a symbol of power, luxury, and prestige, but also a practical way of preserving and increasing wealth. Down through the centuries, it has changed forms and functions: from royal treasuries, through a means of payment, to the contemporary investment vehicle that is today considered the safest protection against inflation and economic crises.

Golden sheen in ancient civilisations

The first traces of gold use date back to ancient Egypt, where this precious metal was associated with gods and eternal life. Pharaohs were buried in golden masks and sarcophagi, as gold was believed to possess divine power and grant immortality. Gold was then reserved for the elite and royal families, representing the ultimate symbol of power and wealth.

In ancient Mesopotamia, India, and China, gold was also used for making jewellery, temples, and decorative items, and later as a medium of exchange. Its durability and indestructibility made it the perfect store of value, thus it occupied a special place in human civilisation from the very beginning.

Antiques – Gold as Money and Prestige

The ancient Greeks and Romans were the first to seriously standardise the use of gold as money. In ancient Greece, gold coins were minted which quickly gained trust across the Mediterranean, while in the Roman Empire, gold became the empire's primary currency. The Romans used it not only for trade but also for financing armies and expansion, with gold coins like the aureus being a symbol of the empire's strength.

During that period, gold also became a global medium of exchange – a universal currency that crossed borders and connected different cultures. It was then that a tradition began which would continue right up to modern times: gold as the basis of the monetary system.

The Middle Ages and Royal Treasuries

During the Middle Ages, gold was the guardian of the wealth of kings, emperors, and nobles. In feudal societies, owning gold meant power and prestige. At that time, gold coins became a key instrument of international trade – the Venetian ducat or the Florentine florin were so highly valued that they were used throughout Europe.

The royal treasuries guarded vast quantities of gold as a symbol of the state's stability and strength. At the same time, gold also had a religious significance – churches and monasteries were decorated with gold, and relics and icons were gilded with the metal to emphasise the divine light.

The New Age – Colonialism and the Gold Rush

The discovery of the New World in the 15th and 16th centuries opened a new chapter in the history of gold. The Spanish brought vast quantities of this metal from Latin America, which enabled the financing of the Spanish Empire, but also caused inflation in Europe.

In the 19th century, the famous began gold fever – in California, Australia and South Africa. Thousands of people left their homes in search of riches, and gold mines became centres of new economic and social change. Gold became more accessible at the time, but still retained its status as the most precious metal.

The gold standard and modern economics

In the 19th and 20th centuries, gold played a key role in the global economy through the so-called. Gold standard. The countries guaranteed the value of their currencies with gold reserves, which allowed for the stability of international trade and the financial system.

Although the gold standard was formally abolished in the 20th century, gold has nevertheless remained a central element of financial systems. Central banks around the world still hold enormous gold reserves today as a guarantee of stability and confidence in national currencies.

Gold in the modern world

Today, gold is no longer directly linked to currencies, but it remains one of the most important forms of asset. Its role has transformed – from money and a symbol of power, to a means of investing and preserving value.

Modern investors see gold as:

Protection against inflation – when money loses value, gold increases.

Port of safety in crises – during periods of instability, investors invest heavily in gold.

Portfolio diversification – gold balances risks and reduces dependence on other asset classes.

Besides investment gold in the form of bars and coins, gold is also present in jewellery, art, and technology. Its application in electronics and medicine further increases demand and confirms its enduring value.

The future of gold – tradition and innovation

What awaits us in the future? Trends show that gold will continue to play a key role in global economic flows. Central banks are increasing their reserves, and digital platforms are facilitating the buying and selling of gold worldwide. In addition to traditional bars and coins, there is also increasing investment in digital „tokenised“ gold, which combines the security of the metal with the speed and flexibility of modern technology.

However, its fundamental role remains the same – gold continues to be synonymous with security, universal wealth, and lasting value.

From royal treasuries and golden crowns, through the mints of the ancient and medieval worlds, to modern vaults and investment portfolios, gold has come a long way, but it has never lost its significance. It is an eternal symbol of power and stability, but also a practical means of preserving wealth.

In a time when the world is changing faster than ever, gold remains a constant – a metal that knows no boundaries, time, or crises. Its history teaches us that gold never goes out of fashion, and its future confirms that it will forever remain one of the most secure pillars of human civilization.

Zlato je jedan od najstarijih i najdragocenijih metala koje čovečanstvo poznaje.
